Turtle Shell Fragments
- Two different species of turtle shell neural osteoderms (central carapace)
- Hell Creek Formation, ~68-66 million years old – Garfield County, Montana, USA
- Each is ~3/4 inch long
These are two interesting turtle shell fragments that come from the central part of the upper shell of the turtle, and represent two different species. Very nice coloration on one, and cool dimpled texture on the other.
These turtle osteoderms are 100% original with no restoration or filling. They have been stabilized.
Turtle shell fragments are a not uncommon sight in many Hell Creek deposits which are rich in fossils. Their presence often represent layers of river or lakebed that have become fossilized. Many species of both soft- and hard-shelled turtle can be found in the Hell Creek Formation.
